What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry which deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of bite problems due to misaligned teeth and/or jaws.

An orthodontist is a dentist who is specialized in the field of orthodontics. An orthodontic examination consists of an in-person examination of the face, teeth, and soft tissues such as gums, jaw functions and relations of the upper and lower teeth. The clinician then takes extra-oral (outside of the mouth, ie. photographs of the face) and intra-oral (photographs of teeth and gums) photographs, orders x-rays and makes study models to finalize the diagnosis and treatment plan.

The aim of orthodontic treatment is to create a smile that is functional, esthetic and stable in the long term. Our specialty is dedicated to understanding the development of dentition and facial characteristics and applying this vast knowledge to the unique needs of our patients.
